What Type of Implant is Best for Reconstruction?

Several types of implants are available to restore the shape of your breasts after lumpectomy or mastectomy. Each one can be a good choice, though there are slight differences in look, feel, and performance. Understanding these considerations will help you figure out what is best for your breast reconstruction.

Saline Implants

Saline implants are essentially silicone shells containing a sterile saltwater solution. They are adjustable in terms of volume because they are filled after placement. Implant rupture is also easier to detect because the breast will deflate. Additionally, saline implants cost slightly less than other options.

Because saline implants have the consistency of water, they can look and feel less natural than silicone implants. They can also be more prone to rippling, which may be seen or felt under very thin skin.

Silicone Implants

Silicone implants contain a silicone gel. The gel is thicker than saline and more closely resembles the look and feel of breast tissue.

A rupture is harder to detect with silicone implants because they will retain their shape. Routine screening is recommended after surgery to check the integrity of these implants.

Gummy Bear Implants

Gummy bear implants are the newest type of implant. They are made from a highly cohesive silicone gel.

These implants hold their shape particularly well, which has unique advantages for breast reconstruction. They also tend to have superior long-term performance due to a lower rate of rupture. Our practice favors the Sientra OPUS® implants for flatteringly full and firm breasts.

Implant Size, Shape, and Texture

Breast implants also come in various sizes, shapes, and textures. Implant size, which is measured in cubic centimeters, commonly ranges from 175cc to 700cc. In terms of shape, some implants are round while others resemble a teardrop. You can even choose between a smooth or textured shell.
