It generally takes six to eight weeks to recover from breast augmentation. However, every woman has a slightly different experience.
Double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Joshua B. Hyman will go over every aspect of your recovery and results in person. In the meantime, here is a general idea of what you can expect after surgery.
Immediately After Surgery
Following your breast augmentation procedure, you will rest in our private recovery room for one or two hours. At that time, a family member or friend can escort you home. You will not be able to drive for 48 hours.
It is normal to experience some swelling and bruising. You will likely be placed in a surgical bra and have an elastic band wrapped around your upper chest after surgery. These garments help support your breasts and provide gentle compression. The breast strap can also decrease inflammation.
Certain activities must be avoided during the early stages of recovery. You will receive a complete list of restrictions that will include not showering for two or three days and not using any tobacco products. Dr. Hyman will see you for a follow-up visit after three to five days.
Resuming Activities and Enjoying Your Results
You can walk and climb stairs right after your procedure. These light activities will boost circulation and help support your body’s healing process.
You will likely be able to return to work within seven days, depending on the nature of your job. At two weeks you can resume moderate activity. At six weeks you can resume more strenuous tasks and exercises.
The results of breast augmentation surgery are immediate, though they may be obscured by temporary swelling. Your breasts will likely sit higher or tighter on your chest than they will when the healing process is complete.
