Am I a Good Tummy Tuck Candidate?

Your safety and satisfaction are always a top priority when under the care of Dr. Hyman and his professional, caring, board-certified medical staff. It is imperative to ensure that you are a good candidate for the surgery. While tummy tucks are among the most popular plastic surgery procedures performed in the U.S., the procedure may not be ideal for every patient.

A tummy tuck is not weight loss surgery and should only be performed when you have reached a stable, healthy weight and are in good general health.

You are likely an ideal candidate for a tummy tuck in New York City if you:

  • Suffer from stubborn pockets of unwanted fat that can’t be resolved with diet and exercise
  • Have loose, stretched abdominal skin and muscles
  • Are in good general health
  • At or near a stable, healthy weight
  • Do not smoke or are willing to quit
  • Able to stop any medications that thin the blood or inhibit healing for several weeks before your surgery
  • Want to live with a slimmer, tauter, sculpted abdomen

The best way to determine if a tummy tuck is right for you is to book a free initial consultation with Dr. Hyman. He will examine you and thoroughly assess your goals, health status, and medical history, and answer your questions and concerns to your satisfaction without pressure or time constraints. Multiple pre-operative consultations are offered and are sometimes necessary.

How is a Tummy Tuck Performed?

This procedure is performed in our private, AAAASF-certified onsite surgical suite under anesthesia. The incision scar is lower on the abdomen, and Dr. Hyman prefers an incision much shorter than that placed by most other plastic surgeons. We follow each patient’s healing closely and deliver scar management therapy at no charge for the first year after surgery.
During this surgery, Dr. Hyman tightens the belly with a special suture called Quill TM, which creates an extremely tight abdominal wall without the problem of suture knots. Suture knots can lead to infections and other complications. He may employ abdominal wall nerve blocks with long-acting anesthetics such as Exparel, which help abbreviate recovery time and minimize reliance on pain medications. Dr. Hyman offers "no narcotic" post-surgery pain relief for all his patients as well if desired.

Tummy Tuck Recovery: What to Expect

Find a friend or family member to drive you home after the procedure. If you prefer to come alone for your surgery, our friendly staff is happy to arrange for a private nurse to travel to your home or hotel to care for you and keep you comfortable in the early stages of your recovery.

Following your surgery, you will need to sleep on your back with pillows for about two weeks. You can return to work in seven days but must avoid lifting anything heavy for 2-4 weeks, including pets and children. Gentle walks are encouraged immediately, as this can boost circulation and elevate your mood.

Following surgery, Dr. Hyman will place a wide, soft compression belt, called an abdominal binder, around your midsection to facilitate optimal healing. Most surgical sutures will dissolve naturally, and any drains that may have been placed will be removed one to two weeks after your procedure.

Dr. Hyman is a board-certified plastic surgeon certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgeons. This signifies that he is committed to maintaining the highest levels of safety and satisfaction, and he has met the rigorous standards of the American Board of Plastic Surgeons.

Your custom tummy tuck surgical plan

To achieve impeccable results, Dr. Hyman plans each procedure meticulously. The planning process for your tummy tuck in NYC begins during your initial consultation, where you will meet personally with Dr. Hyman. The consultation will take place in a very private, comfortable, supportive environment.

It is vital that you fully understand everything about the procedure and recovery, and what to expect; Dr. Hyman will explain every aspect of your procedure so you have honest, clear expectations about the changes in your figure you can expect.

Patient education is a crucial element of Dr. Hyman’s approach to patient care. He wants you to be an active participant in planning your procedure, and he will give you all the information you need to make a truly informed decision.

Your Private Consultation

Dr. Hyman spends a lot of time with his patients before their surgeries.

He never rushes the process and is prepared to answer questions for as long as necessary, as he does not overschedule his day for that reason.

To determine candidacy, Dr. Hyman will examine the abdomen and measure the amount of skin to be removed, evaluating the overall skin quality and muscle wall condition. These factors dictate his surgical approach and treatment plan. The length and location of the abdominal scar is always discussed, along with the recovery process and surgical risks.

Patients leave their consultations feeling informed, educated, and empowered. To learn more about tummy tucks, please contact Joshua B. Your Customized Abdominoplasty

Tummy tucks performed by Dr. Joshua B. Hyman are fully customized. Your abdominoplasty will be designed specifically for you to address your unique needs and goals. During your consultation, you will discuss the location and length of your incision, the degree of correction required, and when your surgery can be scheduled. Depending on your unique condition, Dr. Hyman may recommend:

Full tummy tuck

The full tummy tuck procedure removes excess skin and fat on the entire abdomen, both above and below the navel. The procedure also tightens abdominal muscles. A full tummy tuck involves an incision from hip to hip. However, when under the care of Dr. Hyman, this incision is placed lower than the location used by many other plastic surgeons, which helps to conceal scarring.

Mini tummy tuck

The mini tummy tuck is suited for patients with only a modest amount of extra fat and loose skin below the belly button. Due to the targeted, focused nature of a mini tummy tuck, the incisions are much shorter, but the results remain magnificent.

A tummy tuck often includes custom liposuction to remove excess fat. Dr. Hyman routinely performs liposuction of the flanks and inner thighs in tandem with abdominoplasty. Regardless of the technique used in your procedure, Dr. Hyman is known for creating natural-looking results with discreetly hidden scars. A typical tummy tuck procedure in New York lasts about two hours and is performed in our on-site, AAAASF-accredited surgical center under general anesthesia. Most patients can return home the evening of their procedure under the care of another adult.

How soon after pregnancy can I get a tummy tuck?

It’s recommended to wait at least 6 months to a year after childbirth before having a tummy tuck. This allows your body to heal, your weight to stabilize, and hormone levels to return to normal. If you're planning future pregnancies, you may want to delay the procedure.

Will a tummy tuck remove stretch marks?

A tummy tuck can remove some stretch marks, particularly those located on the lower abdomen, as excess skin is removed. However, stretch marks outside this area may remain.

Can a tummy tuck help with back pain or posture?

Yes! Many patients experience improved posture and reduced back pain after a tummy tuck, especially if their procedure includes muscle repair. Strengthening the abdominal muscles can provide better core support.

Can a tummy tuck be combined with other procedures?

Absolutely. Many patients combine a tummy tuck with liposuction, breast surgery, or other body contouring procedures for enhanced results. This is commonly known as a Mommy Makeover.

How long do I need to wear a compression garment after surgery?

Patients typically need to wear a compression garment for 4 to 6 weeks after surgery. This helps reduce swelling, support healing, and improve contouring results.

Is a tummy tuck a weight loss procedure?

No, a tummy tuck is not a weight loss solution. It is a body contouring procedure designed to remove excess skin and tighten muscles after significant weight loss or pregnancy. Patients should be at or near their goal weight before surgery.

Will my belly button look natural after a tummy tuck?

Yes! Dr. Hyman carefully reshapes and repositions the belly button to ensure a natural appearance that complements your new abdominal contours.

How soon can I return to work after a tummy tuck?

Most patients can return to desk jobs within 2 weeks, while jobs that require physical activity may require 4 to 6 weeks of recovery. Dr. Hyman will provide personalized guidance based on your lifestyle and job demands.

How long do tummy tuck results last?

Results can be long-lasting if you maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle. Significant weight fluctuations or pregnancy after the procedure can affect your results.

How do I know if I need a full or mini tummy tuck?

A full tummy tuck is best for those with excess skin and muscle laxity in both the upper and lower abdomen, while a mini tummy tuck is ideal for patients with mild lower abdominal concerns. Dr. Hyman will evaluate your needs during a consultation.
