Ear surgery procedure

Dr. Hyman customizes the otoplasty procedure to fit the age and goals of the patient. Multiple techniques can be used to achieve different results. Most commonly, an incision is made on the back of the ear. Once the cartilage is exposed, it can be reshaped. If needed, a piece of cartilage may be removed. Sutures secure the new shape or position of the ears. General anesthesia or sedation is used to keep you comfortable during the procedure. Dr. Hyman will perform your otoplasty in his accredited private ambulatory surgery facility. The surgery takes between two and three hours on average. While most adults can go home on the same day as the surgery, children are often kept in the medical facility for observation overnight.

Ear surgery recovery

Dr. Hyman will provide detailed and personalized post-surgery instructions. Generally, after surgery, you will need to wear a bandage over your head and ears for a few days. The next phase of healing involves wearing a special headband 24 hours a day for three weeks. For the following three weeks, the headband must be worn at night. In most cases, sutures do not need to be removed.
